OtterCares Ambassador Spotlight – Meet Chris!

March 22, 2019

Name: Chris

Department: Engineering

Why did you become an OtterCares Ambassador?

I get to meet a lot of great people doing important things in the community and see where our contributions add value. I like being able to talk to my co-workers about the good things that are going on as a result of our actions and help to motivate more participation.

Who or what has influenced your volunteer work (why do you volunteer?):

I’m passionate about engineering and I really enjoy the STEM initiatives in schools. I wish these sorts of programs were available when I was a child and I enjoy being able to help others experience the joy in solving problems that engineering has given me in my life.

Describe a volunteer activity you have been involved in that relates to the OtterCares purpose statement?

I’ve been involved in the Engineering Brightness lantern 2.0 design. This is a hands-on mentoring project teaching middle school students all facets of designing an electronic design including industrial, electrical, mechanical, and software engineering. The new design is well underway and what the students have already learned and done is amazing.

Describe your favorite volunteer activity (either one time or ongoing):

I think my favorite has been the above.

Why do you think the OtterCares purpose is important?

I believe that there’s a pretty significant gap between what schools and other educational non-profits can achieve on their own and what they can do given some help. OtterCares helps to fill that gap with these organizations by facilitating our volunteer efforts, offering tools and guidance, and providing grants and material support.
