Deirdre is an enthusiastic champion for OtterCares at our distribution center in Frederick, CO. She’s always one of the first to sign-up for a project and her energy and drive inspire others to get involved as well. Read more below about how and why Deirdre is involved with OtterCares!
Why did you become an OtterCares Ambassador? I have worked as a volunteer organizer /event planner in the past for a nonprofit and really enjoyed it. I knew my skills would be helpful.
Who or what has influenced your volunteer work? I volunteer because I have experienced firsthand how important volunteering is. I had cancer in 2011 and had 7 weeks of radiation. Almost every day a volunteer from the American Cancer Society picked me up and drove me from Fort Collins to Loveland for my radiation appointment. I could not have gotten through this without them!
Describe a recent volunteer activity you have been involved in: Last Thursday I taught a class of 3rd graders at Dupont Elementary. It was through Junior Achievement and it was about “Our City”. The kids learned about zoning, starting a business, why we pay taxes and media.
What is your favorite volunteer activity? Junior Achievement is my favorite! I have taught 4 different classes and volunteered at Finance Park twice. It’s so much fun and it feels good to know you are inspiring young minds!
Why do you think the OtterCares purpose is important? Children are the future. What we do for OtterCares is definitely making an impact in our community. I can see it in the children I teach that they will remember the lessons I have taught them and hopefully when they grow up they will want to volunteer too.
